3 Novels | Silver Excellence Badge

This activity was about reading 3 novels during a term. I decided to read three novels from the Shakespeare sophisticated book collection. The three novels I read were: King Lear, Henry V (5th) and Romeo & Juliet.

King lear is a book about a King deciding who is next in line for his crown out of his 2 daughters. The eldest daughter had manipulated King Lear into thinking she was the one who had loved him more by saying she loved him with all her heart. The youngest daughter was being honest to her father and said that she loved him with half a heart because she needs space in her heart to love other people besides her father. King Lear ended up angry with his youngest daughter and banished her from his Kingdom. The kingdom falls apart and he gains humilliation for he had made a mistake.

Henry the fifth is a book about Henry being new to the throne and declaring war on France. Everyone thought that this was a foolish decision and had doubted the capability of the English Army as they were outnumbered 10 to 1. This means that for every one person in the English army, there were 10 people in the French Army.

Romeo & Juliet is about two people in an impossible love situation. Their love for each other was forbidden. However, they would go to great lengths for each other and felt as they were the only two people in the world. Romeo went to Juliet’s house and the next day they had gotten married but Juliet’s cousin Tybalt had known that Romeo was at his family’s house. Tybalt had drawn his sword out and asked for a battle with Romeo. Romeo refused to fight with Tybalt but Mercutio, Romeo’s good friend decided to fight for Romeo as Tybalt had insulted his family, the Montagues. At the death of his good friend, he got angry and battled Tybalt and ended up winning the battle. He was banished from the city of Mantua. They miscommunication of Juliet’s ‘death’ caused both of their lives.

I enjoyed this activty because I really enjoy reading books and my favourite books are from Shakespeare.

3 Motivational Quotes | Silver Excellence Badge

This activity was about creating 3 motivational posters using quotes from inspirational people in order to motivate someone else. I chose create posters about Malala Yousafzai, Mother Teresa, and Rosa Parks because I am familiar with each of these people’s stories and how they can help inspire other people around the world.

Malala Yousafzai is a Pakistani activist who was born on the 12th of July 1997. At just 15 years old, Malala was on her way to school when two Taliban had stopped the bus and asked for Malala. One Talib unfortunately shot her and the bullet went through her head and into her shoulder. Despite this, Malala continued to advocate for young people who do not have the basic rights of Education.

Mother Teresa was a Roman Catholic nun, who had dedicated her life to helping the less fortunate. Mother Teresa had founded the Missionaries of Charity which is a foundation devoted to helping those in need. She was also a Nobel Peace Prize winner and had become a nun at the age of 18.

Rosa Parks was an American activist. Her courage had been shown when she refused to give up her seat at a bus in Alabama. This became the spark of a civil rights movement and her actions had a great impact on other people who were facing prejudice. Rosa Parks used her voice to bring attention to racial injustice.

These three people have had a big impact on this world’s history. They are inspirational people who used their voices in order to help other people who were facing difficult times throughout their lives.

Helping with Room 4’s Whale Tail

LI: to pay it forward.

CARE stands for confidence, attitude, respect and excellence. For my third activity for my excellence badge, I completed a task created by a teacher. When we were designing our whale tails, Mr Goodin’s from Room 4 asked Chisa, Bella and I to assist with their whale tail. Room 4’s whale tail was based off of a book named ‘Tohora’. We took a look at the way the book was illustrated and used the illustrations as a guide with the new design. The whale tail already had a blue background colour and a yellow title; Tohora. We decided to add two stones at the ends of the tail as requested. The hook at the bottom of the tail was inspired by the book and also our school values; Manaaki Whenua, Manaaki Tangata, Haere Whakamua (Care for the people, Care for the land, go forward). These values are written on a wall, in our school with a big hook representing Manaiakalani. The outside border is also inspired by the book. We used a kowhaiwhai pattern to make a border.

I enjoyed helping Room 4 because by helping out, you can get the opportunity to learn new things and have a learning adventure.

My Personal Passion | CARE Awards

LI: to create a DLO about your personal passion.

CARE award badges are given to students who show Confidence, Attitude, Respect and Excellence during school. This activity was based around making a digital learning object (DLO) about your personal passion. A personal passion is often an activity that a person has great feelings about.

My personal passion is art. Art holds a strong meaning to me because I can showcase my thinking and feelings. For example, I really enjoyed when we did an art challenge based off of Kadinsky’s art called Circle Art. We listened to different music types while painting our emotions with colours we think represent that emotion. This art challenge was really fun because I got to learn while doing my personal passion.

Art gives you the opportunity to establish your creativity and emotions. Art comes in different types of forms ranging from music to sketching. My passion in Art is painting, digital art and drawing.

I enjoyed this activity because it was good to talk about my personal passion and sharing my thoughts on Art.

Stan Walker | Silver Excellence Badge

LI: to research a New Zealander who has shown excellence or creativity in their life.

Our CARE badges stand for Confidence, Attitude, Respect and Excellence. Confidence means to be certain with your ability to learn. Attitude means to maintain a positive behaviour to learn. Respect means to be kind and show proper manners. Excellence means to excel at every opportunity you are faced with.

This activity was about researching a New Zealander who has presented excellence in their life. I chose to research about Stan Walker. Stan Walker is an Australian born New Zealander. He is a singer who is very well known in New Zealand and embraces his culture and background with his songs. He has shown excellence throughout the years by representing New Zealand and receiving many awards while doing so. His creativity is noticed globally and he is a very successful person. His song ‘Aotearoa’ was a big hit and went viral. Aotearoa is the Te Reo Maori name for New Zealand and many people have recognized the Maori culture through Stan Walker. His work inspires many people to this day.

I enjoyed this activity because it was interesting to learn more about Stan Walker and his work and also how his work has affected many young New Zealanders with embracing their cultural background.

Silver Respect | Helping Hand

A part of learning in Panmure Bridge School, year 7&8 students get to complete 20 tasks which showcase the CARE values of our school. CARE stands for Confidence, Attitude, Respect and Excellence. This task was created by my teacher, Mrs Anderson. The task I completed was to help my teachers get everyone’s artwork completed for showcasing it on the wall. I enjoyed giving my teachers a helping hand because being helpful is a way of showing respect.
