Evolution of Transportation

LI: To identify how technology has changed when we consider how it was fit for purpose.

Today we were looking at the change of technology. Over the past 100 years, technology has changed in order to make things easier. This is called fit for purpose. Transportation devices have become more convenient compared to their initial design. Land transportation in 1922 was fit for purpose because it could carry things from Point A to Point B. The car was initially made in order to make it more convenient to transport goods/artillery to different locations. When the four wheel drive was introduced, the idea was to develop the wheel’s into more durable tires.

I found this task intriguing because it was interesting listing the differences from over 100 years ago.

An interesting fact I learnt during this activity was that most cars were far slower than current cars.

Match Girls Strike 1888

LI: to identify the significance of the Match Girls Strike of 1888.

Today we had a session with David, our PB4L leader. He was teaching us about the match girls strike of 1888. This Strike of 1888 explains the hardships that the match girls went through, this eventually led to a protest trying to raise awareness for women who don’t get appreciate their hard work by not getting paid.

I found this task interesting because I never knew that this ever took place. An interesting fact I found during this activity was how no one really knew much about the prejudice the workers were facing.

Informal vs Formal Language

LI: to identify the style of a piece of text – informal/formal.

Today, we looked into the two styles you can find in texts. These are; informal and formal. Informal and formal language is the style of text people write in. Formal language is used in settings or situations that are professional or when you want to make a good impression. Informal language is used in unprofessional situations or when you are comfortable with or know someone. The two types of language styles help with giving a first impression. It is always important to use the correct style in the correct situations in order to show that you are a professional. We completed an activity where we changed some informal sentences into formal sentences. Informal language has short sentences, abbreviations and many more grammatical errors.

Firework Provocation

LI: to consider both sides of a story.

Today we were practicing considering both sides of a story. Our topic was fireworks and the provocation was introduced later on. A provocation is a question or statement that makes someone think hard or have a lot of feelings about.

First we researched and listed reasons as to why fireworks are good. Fireworks are good because they are used for illumination and shouldn’t be harmful when used properly. People often celebrate their traditions with fireworks making them an important symbolization of celebration and tradition. After this, we researched about reasons as to why fireworks are bad. Fireworks contain 3 greenhouse chemicals that are; carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and nitrogen that are released into the air once they explode. This can be very harmful to our environment.

After researching, we had an extended discussion where we listed reasons why we think we should ban fireworks and reasons why we think we should continue the use of fireworks. Although my group had many good reasons for each side, my opinion is that we should continue the use of fireworks under some circumstances. I think we should have many strict safety protocols when it comes to fireworks because they are very unpredictable.

I enjoyed this activity because I got to consider both sides of a provocation and came up with my own answer as to why we should/shouldn’t ban fireworks.

Manaiakalani Film Festival 2022

Today, Panmure Bridge School went to the Hoyts at Sylvia Park mall to watch the short film’s each school from the Manaiakalani Cluster had created.

We all came together and watched short films that had different morals. Each short film we had watched was very interesting and entertaining. My favourite short film was the PokeBlade one from LS1, Panmure Bridge School because the creativity of the movie was phenomenal. Something about the film I also liked was how behind all of the fun, the moral of the film was to go against bullying. I also really enjoyed In Your Head by Room 3 from Ruapotaka school because our class has also looked into different perspectives or POV’s which made me connect to the film further.

I enjoyed today because it was a lot of fun and showed that each school from the Manaiakalani Cluster has a lot of creativity in their minds and make learning fun!

Transportation Devices

LI: to identify the four different modes of transport and their changes over time.

The four different modes of transport are air, land, sea and rail. We explored more about the types of transportation and how they have evolved over time to build an understanding of how humanity makes changes to vehicles like cars, boats, trains and planes. An example of air, land, sea and rail based vehicles are: planes, cars, boats and trains. I found this task informational because I learnt a lot during this activty. An interesting fact I learnt during this activity was that planes carry other things like: animals, packages and more.

Family Tree | Te Reo Maori Challenge

LI: to learn how to communicate aspects of your geneology.

This week for the Te Reo Maori challenge, we were learning about how to talk about our aspects of our geneology using Maori words. To do this, we put together a family tree that shows the names of ourselves, our parents and our grandparents. This will help us to answer questions in Te Reo Maori. For example: if someone asks you “Ko wai ō mātua?” (Who are your parents?), the family tree would help you answer this (Ko Bibi Gul taku whaea, Ko Yavaz taku matua.) Ko wai ō tūpuna? translates to Who are your grandparents?. If someone asked me this I would reply back with ” Ko Sayed Ahmad taku koro and Ko Hawa taku kuia “.

I enjoyed this activity because I learnt more about Te Reo Maori and how to communicate sentences in Maori.

Silhouette Bird Art

LI: to learn how to use tone, blending and different brush strokes with paint.

We have been learning how to corporate tones, blending and brush strokes with our art using paint. We chose a bird that is endemic to New Zealand and researched five facts about them. We chose birds because the New Zealand bird of the year award is going to be announced soon on the 31st of October. We looked through different videos that taught us about the technique used in order to get a nice background.

I enjoyed this activity because I learnt more about different techniques using paint also found out five different facts about the Kokako Bird.

Narrator Perspective

LI: to rewrite the story of Cinderella using a different narrative perspective.

We have been continuing our learning about the different types of perspectives author’s bring to a text. Our challange today was to change the fairytale of Cinderella from third person omniscient to first person. Third person omniscient is when the narrator is not a character in the story but watches what is happening and knows all of the facts about the story. The pronouns would be the same as third person perspective (he, she, they). First person is when the narrator is the main character and are telling the audience what they experience and what happens to them.

I enjoyed this activity because it was interesting listening to other group’s ideas as well as writing our own version of Cinderella in a different perspective/point of view.

Narrator Perspective

LI: to understand what types of perspectives are used.

This morning we have been learning about the different perspscteives authors bring to a text. An example of a narrator perspectives is second person. This is when the author uses words like you, your and yours to describe the events.

It was a dull day when you woke up. After getting ready, you made your way to school. You walked through the gates and saw your best friend. Suddenly a wave of energy hit you like a brick. Your eyes were now focused on your friend, while you thought about how your day was going to be like.

I found this activity interesting because I didn’t know that there were five perspectives.
